If you are interested in waterfalls, the Gitgit twin waterfalls in Sukasada district, Buleleng, could be your ideal destination. It takes some 40 minutes from Bedugul botanical park, passing along a road that wends its way up and downhill through beautiful countryside, with trees, hills and lakes, until you eventually come to a sign reading “Gitgit Twin Waterfalls, Air Terjun Campuhan” on the left-hand side.

You have to walk down about 300 meters of steps and pay a Rp 5,000 (51 US cents) entrance fee before eventually reaching the waterfalls, which are managed by the local customary village. Shady trees, the chirping sounds of birds and cool weather will accompany you on your way to the Campuhan waterfall. Many tourists like to take pictures in front of the falls, with the cliffs towering above them, while some enjoy bathing under the pouring water.

According to the villagers, it is not only tourists that flock there, but also local people who want to perform melukat ritual cleansing, especially during and in readiness for religious celebrations, such as ahead of Nyepi (the Hindu day of silence). After seeing the Campuhan waterfall, you can go further down to the Mekalangan waterfall, located not too far away. It only takes 5 minutes to get there, but it is difficult to reach the bottom part of the waterfall.

For safety reasons, many people opt not to go. Around the Mekalangan waterfall, there are some springs where you can drink the water and refresh your body after the sweaty trip. A public toilet is available too. You can also take a look around the local souvenir shops managed by the villagers. The shops also sell food and beverages at normal prices for local people and domestic tourists, but different prices for foreigners. 0 Le Mayeur Museum

Le Mayeur Museum in Sanur is definitely a must-see place in Bali for the simple reason that some of Belgian artist Andrien Jean Le Mayeur‘s finest paintings of his lovely wife Ni Pollok, who often modeled for him, are housed here. Located just steps away from Sanur Beach, the museum is flanked by the Grand Bali Beach Hotel to the south and Pura Dalem (Temple of the Dead) and the Diwangkara Hotel on the north. Le Mayeur Museum features a good variety of the artist’s paintings in both oil and water colors. Most of his paintings are of his wife Ni Pollok or other young Balinese women in various states of repose or doing traditional crafts such as weaving.

La Mayeur’s works capture the natural beauty of Bali and its culture long ago. With each brush stroke the viewer can envision the passion he had for his art and his wife Ni Pollok. Besides paintings, the museum also has many household items on display including an elegantly carved octagonal teakwood table, elaborately carved cupboards, vases, and many more. There are also several decorative plates and ceramics according to Michele Cempaka. Le Mayeur Museum was originally Le Mayeur’s home, but as his fame grew, high ranking authorities including former President Soekarno, former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and many others came to visit him.

In 1956 the Indonesian minister of education and culture visited Le Mayeur as well, and was so impressed by Le Mayeur’s paintings that he asked Le Mayeur if he would consider allowing his home to be preserved as an official museum. Le Mayeur agreed and began to produce even more paintings which he wanted to be included in his collection of work. In the beginning, there were only two buildings — the main house and a kitchen. Later, a storage building for Le Mayeur’s paintings was constructed behind the main house. The buildings are simple but have an artistic flair which embodies Le Mayeur’s aesthetic and love of beauty.

There are several exceptional shrines scattered in the museum’s grounds and the shrine in the front near the entryway is particularly beautiful — over time a tree has woven its branches around it. Next to the smaller building are two busts — Ni Nyoman Pollok with her husband Adrian Jean Le Mayeur De Merpres. The busts sit under a small pavilion which overlooks a lovely water pond. Across from here is a Bale Bengong — a traditional open air pavilion where La Mayeur would often find inspiration to paint. Ni Pollok later used this area for preparing offerings, dance training and weaving, although originally she had utilized the smaller building, which was called Bale Pecanangan.

The story goes that Le Mayeur met Ni Pollok when she was still a child. She was an excellent Legong dancer who regularly performed at Pura Prajurit — a temple for the dead heroes, which is near the home he rented in Sanur. Shortly thereafter, she began modeling for him and their relationship deepened. They were married according to Balinese tradition in an Adat Hindu ceremony. She loved him very deeply and wanted to have a child with him as evidence of their love, but Le Mayeur didn’t want to have children; instead, he preferred that she preserve her beautiful figure so that he could continue to memorialize her in his paintings.

After Ni Pollok’s death in 1985, the museum was taken over by the Indonesian government. For several years the paintings were neglected, resulting in deterioration, but by 2003, Mr. Ketut Naria made an appeal to the State Ministry for Culture and Tourism, through the deputy assistant of art, Surya Yuga, that Le Mayeur’s works be immediately restored. In 2003 a restoration team was brought together for the purpose of restoring all of the paintings in the Le Mayeur Museum. While conditions have improved, there are still several paintings which are in need of attention.

Antonio Blanco was born on September 15, 1911, in Manila, the capital of the Philippines.

Both of his parents were Spanish, a fact that Blanco believed linked him geographically and spiritually to Miro and Salvador Dali. His father settled in Manila during the Spanish – American War, where he attained prominence as a physician. Blanco was educated at the American Central School in Manila. During his high school years he loved the arts, literature and language classes but struggled in scientific subjects. It is no wonder that he spoke six languages – Spanish, French, English, Tagalog, Indonesian and a bit of Balinese. After completing high school in Manila, Blanco studied at the National Academy of Art in New York under Sidney Dickinson. During those early formative years, Blanco concentrated on the human form, fascinated by the female body more than any other subject matter.

To further his studies and ignite his traveling spirit, he traveled extensively throughout the world before he finally landed in Bali in 1952. The King of Ubud gave Blanco a piece of land to set up his home and studio in Campuan, Ubud, at the confluence of two sacred rivers. Blanco and his Balinese wife, the celebrated dancer Ni Ronji, lived in their mountain retreat, barely leaving it for the world outside. Following a brief trip to the United States, where Blanco acquired many new collectors, the couple never left their fantasy home again. Living in serene surroundings with his four children, Tjempaka, Mario, Orchid and Maha Devi, Bali became Blanco’s center. He was fascinated by the island and completely captivated by its charm.

Blanco lived and worked in his magical hilltop home until his death in 1999, feverishly creating his fantasy portraits of beautiful women. Surrounded by lush gardens, rice fields and with a Banyan tree standing over his family’s temple, Antonio Blanco proceeded to create a new reality for himself. His artistic outpourings of this isolated world became much sought after by eager art lovers, collectors and promoters. Within a few years, Blanco became the most famous foreign artist to make Bali his home. He was recognized in both Indonesia and abroad, receiving numerous awardsnd commanding huge prizes at international auctions. By the end of his life, Blanco had begun building his museum at his studio in Campuan.

Dramatically, he died just before its inauguration. His funeral was marked by a very important cremation in Ubud. It was Blanco’s dream to turn his studio-mansion into a museum. His son, Mario, fulfilled this dream by following his path to become a painter. The Blanco Renaissance Museum is now open to the public, exposing both the maestro’s and Mario’s art works.

Agung Rai has selected the works in his collection based on what he describes as a spiritual connection he feels between a painting and himself if the painting has taksu. Taksu is a Balinese word for a power that can be sensed, that can not be intentionally sought or attained through study. It can be termed divine inspiration, a gift, a kind of charisma what can be bestowed by God on an artist, dancer, musician, carver, writer, orator, or healer. Taksu is not constant, it does not necessarily remain with a person, rather it appears if the person is in an appropriate state of purity, or otherwise deemed suited for receiving a divine gift. It is because of taksu that a novice painter can produce a work of surprising power and grace.
